The Glenholme School, a boarding and day school in Washington, Connecticut, offers specialized education for students, ages 10 to 21, with social, emotional and learning challenges. After nearly 50 years of service to students, the experience and reputation of the school is unprecedented in its industry. And the satisfaction of graduates is empirically evidenced.

In a recent follow-up survey of Glenholme graduates, there is a high rate of agreement that the school prepared them to be successful in college, relationships, and careers. Generally 90% of graduates expressed satisfaction in all three areas noted.

With this level of satisfaction among graduates, it is easy to see why Glenholme was also ranked at the top of “The 50 Best Private Special Needs Schools in the United States” by Masters in Special Education. While a graduate survey was not required to earn the ranking, there were several important criteria necessary for the selection. These criteria include a rich curriculum with a variety of offerings, low teacher-student ratios, and unique programs that transcend the basic academic curricula such as animal therapy, online learning, arts and athletics.

Instruction, in both self-contained and departmentalized classes, comprises elements of small group and individualized instruction through diverse curricula and presentation methods. These varied approaches help to meet individual learning styles and course work needs. Skills development in studying, critical thinking, organization, creative problem solving, cooperative learning, and positive self-advocacy, plus character education and a strategies approach to education are integrated throughout instruction to help form more independent and motivated learners.

Academic life at Glenholme is an inspirational atmosphere delivered by energetic and committed faculty, who promote an individualized approach to studies that involves the intellectual, personal and social growth compatible to each young person’s talents and capabilities. Supportive resources are available to assist students in achieving self-reliance in their academic effort and mastering of their educational goals.

Accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, The Glenholme School provides a comprehensive curriculum for students of all ability levels that leads to a high school diploma. College preparatory courses are labeled with course content titles. Courses for students with moderate specialized learning needs are denoted with the term “core” as in Core Algebra. These courses reflect modifications made to make the course materials and learning more accessible. Courses for students with greater learning needs carry the label “applied” as in Applied English. These courses provide greater modifications for text complexity, pacing, expectations and teacher assistance.

At Glenholme, a strategies approach to learning is utilized with all students. Based on individual strengths and weaknesses, specific strategies are instructed and supported throughout the education program. The approach incorporates strategies for organization, study skills, note taking, reading decoding and comprehension, pre-writing and writing, problem solving, test taking, technology use, cooperative group process, task completion and mathematical systems. Whenever necessary, teachers modify instructional materials and their instruction to meet each student’s present learning style and ability.

Character education, study skills, critical thinking skills, organizational and creative problem solving skills, cooperative learning skills and positive self-advocacy skills are all integrated throughout instruction to help form more independent and motivated learners. Emphasis on living and social skills and a value-based community guide students on a path of personal accomplishment and growth.
